Keeping a Clean Home Through a West Michigan Winter
Winter along the Lake Michigan shoreline is no joke. Lake-effect snow, freezing rain, and temperatures that swing from the teens to the forties in a single week create a constant battle between the outside world and the cleanliness of your home. Boots track in salt and sand. Wet coats and mittens pile up by the door. The dog comes in with muddy paws and snow packed between his toes.
Keeping a clean home in winter is harder than any other season — and it matters more, because everyone is spending more time indoors.
How We Handle Winter Scheduling
We want to be upfront: West Michigan winters affect our schedule. When significant snowfall or icy conditions hit, we may experience delays to keep our team safe on the roads.
Here is how we handle it:
- We will always notify you if we expect a delay or need to reschedule. You will not be left wondering if we are coming.
- We do not cancel lightly. We push through most winter weather and show up as scheduled.
- When rescheduling is necessary, we work with you to find the soonest available opening.
If you are flexible about morning vs. afternoon or have a few days that work, it helps us recover quickly when weather causes a shift.
How to Help Us Help You
A few things make winter visits go smoother for everyone:
Clear walkways and steps if you can. We do not require it, but if you are able to shovel or salt before we arrive, it helps us get in and out safely and efficiently. If clearing paths is not something you can manage — no worries, we understand.
Have a spot for wet boots and outerwear. We take our shoes off at the door and handle our own gear thoughtfully. Having a mat or a small area near the entrance helps keep salt and slush contained.
Let us know if anything changed since we last visited. New furniture, renovations, a new pet, guests staying over — anything that affects the scope of the clean is good to know before we arrive.
Why Winter Cleaning Matters More Than You Think
Most people scale back their cleaning expectations in winter and plan to do a big spring clean to catch up. That strategy has a cost.
Salt and grit that gets ground into floors and carpets over four to five months does measurable damage. Every week those particles sit in carpet fibers, they are cutting into the pile. Hard floors scratched by sand and salt need more intensive refinishing than floors that get regular attention throughout winter.
Beyond the floors, indoor air quality during winter is worse than any other season. Windows stay closed, humidity fluctuates, and everything that comes in from outside stays inside. Regular professional cleaning controls the accumulation of allergens, dust, and bacteria that build up in a closed-up home.
What We Clean in Winter
Our winter visits cover everything we do year-round:
- Kitchen deep clean — counters, appliances, stovetop, sink
- Bathrooms — toilets, tubs, showers, mirrors, floors
- Dusting throughout — ceiling fans, blinds, shelves, baseboards
- Vacuuming and mopping all floors
- High-traffic entryway attention — this is where winter grime concentrates
We also pay extra attention to entryways, mudrooms, and the areas around doors where salt and dirt collect most heavily in winter.
