Your First Professional Cleaning — What to Know
If you have never had a professional cleaning service before, it is natural to have questions. Do you need to clean first? Where should you be? What should you put away? What if there are areas you want skipped?
The short answer is: it does not need to be complicated. Professional cleaning is designed to make your life easier, not to add to your to-do list. Here is what actually helps and what you can let go of.
What You Do Not Need to Do
You do not need to clean before we arrive. This one surprises people. The cleaning team is there to clean your home — you do not need to pre-clean to make the house presentable before we show up. That is the whole point.
You do not need to be home. Many of our clients leave a key or provide a garage code and are at work during the cleaning. As long as you have a secure way to let us in, you do not need to rearrange your day.
You do not need to supply anything. We bring all our own supplies and equipment — cleaning products, vacuums, mops, cloths. You do not need to have anything ready.
You do not need to apologize for the state of your home. We are professional cleaners. We have seen everything. Nothing about the current state of your home is going to surprise or embarrass us. That is genuinely not how this works.
What Actually Helps
Declutter flat surfaces if you can. There is one meaningful thing you can do that improves the outcome of a cleaning: clear the clutter from flat surfaces — countertops, tables, nightstands. We can clean around things, but cleaning under and around stacks of papers, dishes, and accumulated miscellany takes longer and produces a less thorough result than cleaning a clear surface. Five minutes of picking up before we arrive makes a real difference.
Put away anything you do not want touched. Valuable items, sentimental objects, medications, confidential papers, anything you do not want moved or handled — put it away or let us know it is off-limits. We are professional and careful, but if something matters to you, the safest place for it during a cleaning is put away.
Secure or relocate pets if needed. Many of our clients have dogs and cats and we work around them happily. But if your pet gets stressed by vacuum cleaners or unfamiliar people, making a plan for them — a crate, a room they are comfortable in, or a trip to the neighbor’s — makes the visit go smoother for everyone.
Tell us your priorities. If there is a room that needs extra attention, a specific area that concerns you, or anything you want us to skip, let us know before we start. A two-minute conversation at the beginning saves any confusion later.
What to Expect During the Visit
We work systematically through the home, room by room. Most standard cleanings take between two and four hours depending on the home’s size and current condition. A first-time or deep clean takes longer than subsequent recurring visits because we are starting from scratch rather than maintaining.
We will bring our own supplies in and move through the home methodically. You are welcome to be present, to check in, or to leave entirely — whatever is comfortable for you.
If we encounter something unexpected — a maintenance issue, an area that needs a different approach, a question about something in the home — we will flag it rather than guess.
After the Cleaning
Walk through the home and let us know if anything was missed or if something is not right. Feedback after a first visit is genuinely useful — it helps us calibrate to your standards and your home so every subsequent visit is better.
For recurring clients, the first clean is usually the most intensive. Once the home is at a thorough clean baseline, maintaining it takes less time and produces very consistent results visit to visit.
