The Dryer Vent Nobody Thinks About Until Something Goes Wrong
Most homeowners clean the lint trap after every load. That is good — but it is only the beginning of where lint accumulates. The lint trap catches maybe 70% of what comes off your clothes. The rest travels through the exhaust duct and collects in the vent system between your dryer and the exterior of your home.
Over time, that accumulation builds up in ways that create real problems: fire risk, carbon monoxide exposure, wasted energy, and equipment wear. Dryer vent cleaning is one of the most overlooked home maintenance tasks, and one of the most consequential ones when it gets skipped for too long.
The Five Reasons to Clean Your Dryer Vent
1. Fire Prevention
This is the most serious one. The U.S. Fire Administration reports that dryers cause thousands of residential fires each year, and the leading cause is failure to clean them. Lint is highly flammable. Heat from the dryer motor plus accumulated lint in a restricted vent is exactly the combination that starts fires — often in concealed spaces inside walls where they spread before anyone notices.
Annual dryer vent cleaning is not overcautious. It is basic fire prevention.
2. Carbon Monoxide Risk
Gas dryers expel combustion gases through the vent system. A clogged vent restricts that exhaust path. When gases cannot escape properly, they can back up into the living space. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless — you will not know it is there without a detector.
Even if you have a CO monitor (which every home should), preventing the condition is better than relying on the alarm. A clear vent system is part of that prevention.
3. Your Dryer Works Harder and Wears Out Faster
One of the most common signs of a clogged dryer vent is that loads take longer to dry — sometimes significantly longer. A dryer working twice as hard to push hot air through a restricted duct is running its motor and heating element harder and longer with every load. That accelerates wear and shortens the appliance’s lifespan considerably.
If your dryer is taking two cycles to dry what used to take one, a clogged vent is the first thing to check before replacing the machine.
4. Higher Energy Bills
A dryer running extra cycles or running longer per cycle uses substantially more electricity or gas. Over the course of a year, a clogged dryer vent has a real cost on your utility bills — one that disappears after a cleaning.
5. Wildlife Can Move In
This one surprises people. In winter, the warmth from a clogged vent makes the exterior hood flap a hospitable spot for birds, mice, and other small animals looking for shelter. A nest in your vent system blocks airflow further and introduces additional fire risk. We see this regularly in West Michigan homes with neglected vent systems.
Signs Your Dryer Vent Needs Cleaning
- Loads take longer to dry than they used to
- The dryer gets unusually hot to the touch during operation
- Clothes are hotter than normal at the end of a cycle
- The laundry room smells musty or like something is burning
- The exterior vent flap does not open fully when the dryer runs
- You cannot remember the last time it was cleaned
How We Clean Dryer Vents
Professional dryer vent cleaning uses specialized equipment to reach the full length of the duct — something you cannot do effectively with a vacuum hose and a brush kit from the hardware store.
Here is the process:
-
Disconnect and inspect. We pull the dryer away from the wall and disconnect the transition duct. This lets us see the condition of the flexible section and inspect for damage or crushing that restricts airflow.
-
Vent cleaning from the interior. We use a professional rotary brush and vacuum system that extends through the full duct length, loosening and extracting accumulated lint from the interior of the duct all the way to the exterior.
-
Exterior hood check. We verify the exterior vent cap is clear, opens properly, and is not blocked or damaged.
-
Reconnection and test run. We reconnect everything properly and run a short cycle to verify airflow is restored.
The whole process typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. We recommend having it done annually — spring is a natural time to pair it with other seasonal maintenance.
Combining With Other Services
Dryer vent cleaning can be scheduled as a standalone service or combined with a regular or deep cleaning visit. If we are already in your home for a cleaning, adding a dryer vent service at the same time saves a separate scheduling step and is offered at a combined rate.
Pam And A Bucket serves West Michigan homes throughout Muskegon, Norton Shores, Grand Haven, Holland, Spring Lake, and surrounding communities.
